Former President George W. Bush discussed his new veterans initiative that he described as a way smooth veterans' re-entry into civilian life.

Bush, speaking Sunday on ABC's "This Week," said that the new effort helps him handle the decisions to start wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that sent thousands of soldiers to battle.

"No question it helps. I have a duty. I obviously get slightly emotional talking about our vets because I have an emotional — I'm in there with them," he said.

Bush focused on veterans issues last week during an event at his George W. Bush Institute. He said that more work needs to be done to enhance understanding between civilians and veterans who return home.

"Here's what the country will ultimately understand — that one of the great resources we have in our nation is vets," Bush said.
