One year after missing out on the NCAA tournament, the Georgetown men's soccer team captured one of four top seeds in the 48-team field announced Monday.
The Hoyas (17-3-1) earned the tournament's No. 3 overall seed despite falling in double overtime in the Big East tournament final to Notre Dame 3-2. The NCAA berth is Georgetown's second in three years after last making the tournament in 1997.
Maryland (17-1-2), which won its third ACC championship in five seasons with a 2-1 win over North Carolina, was slotted as the No. 2 seed. Virginia (9-6-4) also earned a bid.
The Terps and Hoyas both have byes to the second round and will host games Sunday. If the tournament seeds hold, they would meet in the national semifinals Dec. 7 at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.
If that happens, feuding Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson and his Georgetown counterpart, Lee Reed, should attend -- perhaps with men's basketball coaches Mark Turgeon and John Thompson III -- and be forced to sit together.
