JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former presidential candidate and House Speaker Newt Gingrich is coming to Missouri to raise money for Todd Akin's U.S. Senate campaign.

Akin campaign adviser Rick Tyler, who is a former Gingrich aide, says Gingrich will be in the St. Louis area Monday for a series of events with the Republican congressman.

Gingrich is the second ex-presidential candidate to back Akin after presidential nominee Mitt Romney and other top Republicans abandoned Akin's campaign over remarks he made about pregnancy and rape. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who ran for president in 2008, also has sent email fundraisers on Akin's behalf.

Tyler said Gingrich could help close Akin's fundraising gap with Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill. The GOP's Senate campaign committee and the Crossroads group both have dropped their ads for Akin.
