You don't have to convince Tom Gossin, his brother, Mike Gossin, and Rachel Reinert that the old saying about life being darkest before the dawn has some validity.
After going from a four-piece to a trio when Cheyenne Kimball abruptly left Gloriana in 2011, they've had a string of successes, including their first top-10 single, "(Kissed You) Good Night," from their upcoming second studio album, "A Thousand Miles Left Behind," that is scheduled for July release.
"I guess I can sum it up by saying that I really feel we are the kind of people that bring out their best in the face of adversity," said Tom Gossin, referring to finding out Kimball had literally walked away from a gig and would not return. "It was a scary time, though."
Although the band had started as a three-piece in 2008, Kimball joined it shortly after. While the band had a good degree of success with Kimball -- Gossin praised her contributions that included her work on the band's 2009 self-titled debut album -- the change has coincided with successes, including playing its latest single on the ABC reality show "The Bachelorette." Now the band, which won both an American Music Award for Breakthrough Artist and an ACM Award for Top New Vocal Group in 2010, is looking ahead to its upcoming release, which it completely rerecorded after Kimball's departure.

"Cheyenne's voice was all over the record, so we had to rerecord the entire album," Gossin said. "It was kind of a blessing in disguise. We had been living with the record for a while [at the time of her departure], so we could rethink parts of it. The funny thing, though, [is] we didn't change much. We took one song off, and we recorded vocals ... We really feel the songs we have for this album are the best we've ever written and recorded."
The album, their second produced by Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Matt Serletic, is an engaging mix of up-tempo, good-time numbers ("Wanna Take You Home," "Sunset Lovin'," "Go On ... Miss Me," "Doin' It Our Way") and graceful, heartfelt songs (including "(Kissed You) Good Night," "Can't Shake You," "Turn My World Around," "Carolina Rose," "Soldier Song") that showcase Gloriana's signature harmonies.
"These songs really developed organically, just as [the band] started," he said. "You know, everything happens for a reason. We are just hitting our stride now. We can't help but think this is how it was meant to be."
