NEW YORK (AP) — Google had begun mapping Liberty Island in New York Harbor.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/1l0AEKP ) says the project to put the Statue of Liberty site on Google Maps with Street View started this week.

It will provide 3-D, 360-degree images.

Google also plans to record neighboring Ellis Island.

One of five Google Street View devises used to collect data and imagery is the Trekker. Its portability allows Google to gather 3-D images while moving through tight and intricate places reached only by foot.

It will take several months before the images go live online.

Street View's immersive 360-degree maps have been available for most of New York City since 2007.

The two islands are run by the National Park Service.
