Breaking the traditional rule of not slamming the president while he's overseas, a GOP Senate leader Friday hit President Obama for saying "inane things" and lecturing Israelis about their empathy for Palestinians.

"He's said all sorts of inane things, stringing words together to make them sound good" while in Israel this week, slammed Texas Sen. John Cornyn. "He's the last person who ought to be lecturing the Israelis," Cornyn added in an interview on the Andrea Tantaros Show, a nationally-syndicated radio program.

Obama has been criticized for telling Israeli students on Thursday that they should have empathy for their Palestinian neighbors.

"Put yourself in their shoes. Look at the world through their eyes. It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of their own -- living their entire lives with the presence of a foreign army that controls the movements, not just of those young people but their parents, their grandparents, every single day," he said after terrorist rockets struck Israel.

Cornyn said that Obama was wrong to equate the two nations or push Israel to move quicker to a peace deal, claiming that the Jewish State has "more than gone half way" to cut a deal, but that parts of Palestine have become "terrorist" camps.

"If I were them," he said of Israel, "I would say, 'You need to take care of your problems back home before you come lecture us about our problems."
