Riders on Metro's Green Line are experiencing extra delays Sunday after a piece of equipment fell on an electrified third rail outside West Hyattsville, welding to it.

A cover board somehow dislodged and fell onto the third rail Sunday afternoon, creating lots of smoke but no fire, said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel.

As a result of the accident trains are single-tracking between Fort Totten and Prince George's Plaza Metro stations, in addition to the scheduled single-tracking between Greenbelt and College Park.

Stessel expected the problem to be cleared up later on Sunday, before the Monday rush hour.
