THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Thibodaux Regional Medical Center is moving forward with plans to build a $63 million wellness center that will focus on preventative health care with an education and fitness focus.
The Daily Comet reports (http://bit.ly/1nSVDQz ) the hospital will break ground Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Completion is expected by summer 2015.
The hospital's administration said the center's need is evident in light of emerging health care crises such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. The goal is to prevent such illnesses through a lifestyle of fitness and health education.
The 200,000-square-foot wellness center will be anchored by medically directed wellness and fitness amenities.
That center will feature two pools, including a therapeutic pool for rehabilitation patients and a competition pool that will be open to local swim teams.
There also will be a state-of-the-art imaging center, an orthopedic and sports medicine center, neurosciences center, cardiac rehabilitation, and physical, occupational and speech therapy.
An education center will focus on diabetes, nutrition and weight management.
There will also be a conference center open to health and wellness events as well as community needs.
The center will employee 100 people and have an annual payroll of about $4 million.
