Hamas Refuses Cease-fire Proposal

The Islamic militant group Hamas formally closes the door on the Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire aimed at ending the conflict with Israel. Israel is now intensifying air strikes at the Gaza territory. (July 16)

AS VIOLENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST INTENSIFIES _ HAMAS FORMALLY CLOSES THE DOOR ON AN EGYPTIAN CEASE-FIRE PROPOSAL WITH ISRAEL.

A HAMAS SPOKESMAN IN A TEXT MESSAGE TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAID THAT THE GROUP "INFORMED CAIRO TODAY OFFICIALLY THAT WE DON'T ACCEPT THE PROPOSAL THEY MADE."

WITH HOPES OF A CEASEFIRE FALLING APART, ISRAEL RAMPED AIR ATTACKS ON MILITANT TARGETS IN THE GAZA STRIP.

AT LEAST THREE PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN A STRIKE ON A CAR IN KHAN YOUNIS.

RESIDENTS RUSHED TOWARD THE WRECKAGE SITE, SEARCHING THROUGH THE DEBRIS FOLLOWING THE STRIKE.

THE PALESTINIAN DEATH TOLL IN NINE DAYS OF FIGHTING HAS RISEN ABOVE 200, WITH SOME 1,450 WOUNDED, ACCORDING TO PALESTINIAN HEALTH OFFICIALS.

THE FIRST ISRAEL HAS WAS KILLED OVERNIGHT, FATALLY WOUNDED BY SHRAPNE. SEVERAL OTHRS HAVE BEEN WOUNDED.

ALONGSIDE THE AIR STRIKES, THE ISRAELI MILITARY IS DROPPING LEAFLETS ON PARTS OF THE GAZA STRIP ... TELLING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS TO FLEE AHEAD OF PLANNED AIRSTRIKES.

THE ISRAELI MILITARY SAID IN ITS MESSAGES THAT LARGE NUMBERS OF ROCKETS WERE LAUNCHED FROM THESE AREAS AND THAT ISRAEL PLANS TO BOMB THESE LOCATIONS... LEAVING RESIDENTS WITH A SENSE OF PANIC ...
