Reid asked for unanimous consent to move the Senate to executive session to confirm consensus nominees. Cruz objected to Reid's consent twice, stalling the normal business of the chamber.
Reid reacted by angrily informing the Texas Republican that the defund-Obamacare strategy was the work of "Tea Party anarchists.
"We will now understand that there is an anarchy movement that's afoot," Reid said, referring to a recent New York Times editorial. "But we're not going to bow to Tea Party anarchists who deny the mere fact that Obamacare is the law. We will not bow to Tea Party anarchists who refuse to accept that the Supreme Court ruled Obamacare to be constitutional."
Reid said that it is time for Republican "fanatics" to give up fighting the law because any bill that tried to defund Obamacare would fail in the Senate.
"The simple fact remains: Obamacare is the law of the land and will remain the law of the land as long as Barack Obama is president of the United States and as long as I'm Senate majority leader," Reid said.
