HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — The Hattiesburg Post Office's mail processing center will be relocated to Mobile, Alabama, in 2015.
Hattiesburg, Grenada and Gulfport mail processing will be part of Planned Phase 2 of consolidating up to 82 facilities beginning in January, Enola Rice, U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman, told The Hattiesburg American (http://hatne.ws/1m84h02 ).
Rice said two Texas facilities will be the first to consolidate during phase 1. The remaining 80 centers make up phase 2.
Rice said the Postal Service is addressing operating costs that have led to financial losses of $26 billion over the past three years.
The relocation was not welcome news in Hattiesburg.
"It doesn't make sense to close the Hattiesburg facility and ship all the mail to Mobile where they will have to hire more people to handle the volume of mail from Hattiesburg, Gulfport and Grenada. And then they will have to truck it back to Hattiesburg," said Timothy Eaton, an electronic technician at the Hattiesburg facility.
