RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Drenching rains in parts of Virginia knocked out power to some residents, closed dozens of homes and stranded nine horses in a river.

Parts of central Virginia received more than 2 ½ inches of rain Friday. In the Charlottesville area, officials reported road damage, downed trees and dozens of closed roads.

At a youth camp near Palmyra, nine horses were stranded by flood waters near the Rivanna River. Workers moved the animals to a pasture by Friday afternoon.

About 1,800 Dominion Virginia Power customers lost power.

Parts of Hampton roads had up to 5 inches of rain. Hard hit were Norfolk, Portsmouth and parts of Chesapeake near the Great Dismal Swamp.
