Garcon, Williams are still hurting

The Redskins placed Roy Helu on injured reserve and were still hoping left tackle Trent Williams and receiver Pierre Garcon would be available Sunday.

Williams did not practice Wednesday because of a bone bruise in his knee and was still limping noticeably. Garcon was limited, and his bruised right foot remains sore. Garcon has missed the last two games.

"He has a great personality for coaching. He's very personable. He gets along well with the players, and he has a really good football mind. I don't know anyone here who didn't enjoy being around him when he was our head coach."

"It's nagging a lot more than anyone would expect or wanted to," Garcon said.

The same could be said of Helu, who has a sprained left big toe that he aggravated Sunday during a fourth-quarter reception in which his shoe came off. Helu had a similar injury on his other foot that required three months to heal. He told Shanahan this current one felt worse.

"He's been fighting through a lot of pain, and he got shots every game," Shanahan said.

The Redskins talked to their former running back Tim Hightower, but Shanahan said he might need arthroscopic surgery on his left knee -- which needed reconstructive surgery in November. They signed Ryan Grant instead.

Helu led the Redskins in rushing last season with 640 yards.

"I want to get to the point where I don't have a hitch in my step or I don't have to think about it when playing football," Helu said. "A lot of guys play with that, and it's part of the business in the NFL. When it gets to the point where it's almost unmanageable, then decisions like this have to be made."

Meanwhile, cornerback Cedric Griffin (hamstring) did not practice, while safety Brandon Meriweather (knee) was limited.
