Howard County police fatally shoot man with knife

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) — Howard County police say officers fatally shot a man who confronted them with a knife.

Police say they received two 911 calls Saturday in which a man reported that a person with a knife was planning to kill the occupants of an Ellicott City home. When officers arrived at the home they were confronted by a man with a knife in the front yard.

Police say one officer attempted to use a stun gun and that officers repeatedly told the man to drop the knife but he continued toward him and two officers fired. Officers believe the man is the one who called police.

Police say family members told them the man had recently been talking about suicide. Police did not release the man's name but said he was 61.
