The husband of a woman who was allegedly murdered by a then-Culpeper police officer has been found dead, police said.

Virginia State Police are investigating the death of Gary D. Cook, 62, although preliminary findings determined that he died of natural causes.

About 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Culpeper County sheriff's deputies went to an apartment in the 1000 block of Friendship Way. Cook was discovered deceased by a maintenance crew who had entered an apartment to conduct routine maintenance service, Virginia State police said. An autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday.

Cook's wife, Patricia Cook, was fatally shot by Daniel Harmon-Wright on Feb. 9, while Harmon-Wright was on duty. Harmon-Wright has been charged with murder and other crimes in connection with the incident. He has since been fired from the Culpeper Police Department.

Gary Cook had filed a multimillion wrongful-death lawsuit against Harmon-Wright.
