Initial Jobless Claims Rise By 17,000

Initial unemployment claims for the week ending December 5 rose by 17,000, to a seasonally adjusted 474,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. This was the first increase for initial jobless claims in six weeks, and the total number of people claiming jobless benefits totaled 10 million, the Labor Department said, a sign of slow hiring.
