Illinois state Rep. Tammy Duckworth, a former Veterans Affairs assistant secretary, said Friday that embattled VA Secretary Eric Shinseki “has to go.” As Democrats and Republicans join a vocal chorus against Shinseki, Duckworth’s comments in an exclusive interview with The Washington Post are a particular blow because the Illinois Democrat worked closely with the VA secretary from 2009 to 2011. Duckworth’s comments came just hours after Shinseki apologized to veterans for the systemic delay of health care and promised to hold accountable those officials responsible for the long wait times and falsified records of appointments.
