BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — A Malian military spokesman says jihadist fighters fired two rockets at military points in the northern city of Gao, where the extremists had been fighting the military.

Capt. Daouda Diarra said Thursday there was also shooting on the north side of the city. He said the rockets were likely launched by the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, or MUJAO, which also attacked a Gao checkpoint and fought with military in front of the Town Hall on Thursday.

Diarra said the military is following the group which fled east.

The mayor of Kidal, a city further north, says there was a car suicide bombing near Mali's border with Algeria. Abda Ag Kazina says the bombing targeted the secular Tuareg rebel group and killed one of its fighters.
