Israel launched what could be a long-term offensive in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Tuesday, mobilizing troops for a possible ground invasion. 15 Palestinians were killed, including 5 civilians. (July 8)

DOZENS OF ROCKETS SHOWERED OVER GAZA BY AIR AND SEA TUESDAY KILLING AT LEAST 10 PALESTINIANS, INCLUDING TWO CHILDREN

THE ISRAELI MILITARY SAYS IT LAUNCHED WHAT COULD BE A LONG-TERM OFFENSIVE IN THE HAMAS-RULED GAZA STRIP.

ISRAEL SAY THE OPEN-ENDED OPERATION IS INTENDED TO DELIVER A BLOW AGAINST HAMAS TO END INCREASED ROCKET ATTACKS IN ISRAEL.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Regev, Israeli Prime Minister's spokesman:

"Over the last few weeks hundreds of such rockets have been fired. We have repeatedly warned Hamas that this must stop and the Israel Defense Forces are currently acting to put an end of this once and for all."

TENSIONS SOARED AFTER THE RECENT KILLING OF THREE ISRAELI TEENAGERS AND THE APPARENT REVENGE KILLING OF A PALESTINIAN TEENAGER WHO WAS BURNT ALIVE.

"He was my son. He left me, the people are next to me now, and surely they are helping me cope. But when I'm left alone, I'm going to cry nonstop. It's my son, and for the rest of my life, I will weep for him."

HAMAS OFFICIALS SAID ISRAELI AIRSTRIKES KILLED FOUR HAMAS MILITANTS TUESDAY IN A CAR WHEN TRAVELING.

LATER ANOTHER AIRSTRIKE HIT THE HOME OF A HAMAS LEADER - KILLING SIX PEOPLE AND SETTING OFF A SCENE OF PANIC.

SCREAMING PALESTINIANS CARRIED VICTIMS BODIES, INCLUDING WHAT APPEARED TO BE TWO CHILDREN.
