VOICEOVER:

A NEW CAUSE FOR CONCERN AT ISRAEL'S DOORSTEP.

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE START OF THE SYRIAN CIVIL WAR... AL QAIDA FIGHTERS WITHIN YARDS OF ISRAEL.

IN THE GOLAN HEIGHTS AT ISRAEL'S BORDER WITH SYRIA, A MIX OF REBELS TOOK OVER A BORDER CROSSING LAST WEEK...

SOME OF THE FIGHTERS... PART OF THE FREE SYRIAN ARMY... THEIR FLAG NOW WAVING ON THE SYRIAN SIDE OF THE BORDER.

BUT OTHERS FIGHTING WITH THE NUSRA FRONT... AL QAIDA'S BRANCH IN SYRIA...

THAT'S NOT SITTING WELL WITH GOLAN HEIGHTS RESIDENTS... LIKE THIS DIRECTOR OF A LOCAL VINEYARD.

SOUNDBITE (English) Gabi Kuniel, Director of Agriculture, Kibbutz Merom Golan:

"We saw what's going on in the last six, seven, eight months in Iraq, in Syria, so we prefer (Syrian President Bashar) Assad and not al-Qaida here." (AUDIO: gunfire)

GUN FIRE SO CLOSE IT CAN BE HEARD IN THE DISTANCE...

SOUNDBITE (English) Gabi Kuniel, Director of Agriculture, Kibbutz Merom Golan:

"Rockets fly from the Syrian side to our side."

JUST LAST WEEK... THE ISRAELI ARMY ORDERED FARMHANDS OUT OF THIS VINEYARD... FORCING THEM TO LEAVE BEHIND FRESH GRAPES TO ROT...

MORTAR SHELLS LATER FELL ON THE FIELDS.

SOUNDBITE (English) Gabi Kuniel, Director of Agriculture, Kibbutz Merom Golan:

"We stopped the fire on the fence, the fence of the vineyard, but the heat burnt the vines and the grapes."

THE VINEYARD DIRECTOR SAYS THE GRAPES WILL HAVE TO BE USED FOR CHEAPER WINE... THE DAMAGES ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 200-THOUSAND DOLLARS...

BUT THE THREAT POSED BY AL QAIDA MILITANTS POSITIONED RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO ISRAEL IS WHAT'S CONCERNING SECURITY EXPERTS.

SOUNDBITE (English) Aviv Oreg, former head of the al-Qaida desk on the Israeli National Security Council:

"so they will now, I'm sure that if they have even a short window of operational opportunity to conduct attacks against Israel they will do so."

ISRAELI OFFICIALS BELIEVE THAT THE SYRIAN REBELS' SIGHTS ARE SET -- AT LEAST FOR NOW -- ON SYRIA... BUT THEY'RE KEEPING A CLOSE WATCH ON WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT ACROSS THEIR BORDER... IN SOME CASES JUST SOME FIFTY YARDS AWAY.
