Jackie Walorski car crash: Tributes flow for Indiana Republican killed in head-on collision

News about the death of Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN), who was killed in a car crash Wednesday along with two aides, Zachery Potts and Emma Thomson, drew a bipartisan outpouring of grief and respect.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s office confirmed the deaths. Walorski was first elected to Congress in 2012. She was 58.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced Walorski’s death in a tweet, sharing a statement from her office. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) wrote that he was devastated by the news.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) ordered the flags at the Capitol flown at half-staff to honor Walorski.


Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) expressed his condolences to the families of Walorski and her aides, singling out Thomson, who worked on his 2016 presidential campaign.


Former Vice President Mike Pence, who is a native of Indiana, and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel offered their condolences.


Walorski’s fellow Indiana Republican, Rep. Jim Banks, called her “one of the greatest public servants I’ve ever known.”
