Jakovic called up by Canada for World Cup qualifiers

The final FIFA fixture dates to fall during the MLS regular season will claim at least one member of a D.C. United team in the thick of a playoff race.

United defender Dejan Jakovic was named to the Canadian World Cup qualifying roster for a home game in Toronto against Cuba on October 12 and an away match at Honduras on October 16 in San Pedro Sula. Obviously, Dwayne De Rosario won’t be involved after injuring his left knee when he was with the Canadian team earlier this month.

Canada (2-1-1, 7 points, 0 GD) is third in Group C behind Honduras (2-1-1, 7 points, +2) and Panama (3-1-0, 9 points).

There certainly remains a possibility, though an unlikely one, that Chris Pontius could be named to the U.S. team for its final two games in the CONCACAF semifinal round. Similarly, Andy Najar could be in the mix for the full Honduras squad, but he hasn’t been this year so it would be a surprise.

Should Jakovic, as expected, start against Portland on Saturday, he will have accumulated 18 starts for the year, matching his best total in the previous two seasons. After 23 starts in 2009, Jakovic made 18 in 2010 and just 15 last year.
