President Obama announced that White House press secretary Jay Carney is stepping down and will be replaced by deputy press secretary Josh Earnest.

"Jay has become one of my closest friends and is a great blessing to me and a great adviser," Obama said, explaining that Carney wants to spend more time with his family. "I'm going to miss him a lot."

"I will continue to rely on him as a friend and adviser after he leaves," Obama said. "I've decided that we're gonna put in this slot somebody who is also a friend and adviser ... Mr. Josh Earnest."

"I'm sure you will at some point get frustrated at him as well," Obama said, alluding to the tense briefings that have sometimes taken place between Carney and the press corps.
