Gael Garcia Bernal has landed the lead role in the film Rosewater, which will be directed by first time director Jon Stewart. Bernal will play Maziar Bahari, a Bristish journalist who spent 118 days imprisoned and tortured in Iran while covering the country’s 2009 presidential elections. Bahari details his experience in the book titled Then They Came For Me, A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity and Survival. Rosewater refers to the scent Bahari says accompanied his interrogator each time he returned for questioning about being a spy. This isn’t Gael’s first time starring in a political drama. Most recently he starred in the Oscar-nominted film NO about a campaign to defeat Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in the country’s 1988 referendum.
