Thanksgiving is clearly an American holiday, but this year chef Jose Andres has taken the tradition to his home country of Spain in hopes that "turkey will be a goodwill ambassador to American values."

At last week's Washington Ideas Forum, the chef and restaurateur explained that he would be traveling to Spain with the American Ambassador Alan Solomont to cook a Thanksgiving feast in Madrid. "Here a Spanish boy immigrant is doing a test of a Thanksgiving turkey," the D.C.-based chef exclaimed. The dinner, which was held Friday at the American Embassy, was just the first course. On top of that, the Spanish company Cascajares is making 1,000 roasted turkeys to sell in Spain for the 2012 holiday season, with hopes to build on that number every Thanksgiving thereafter.

Andres was among the American chefs tapped earlier this year by the State Department to be part of the American Chef Corps, who will use food as a form of cultural diplomacy.
