Judge rejects Alexandria waterfront lawsuit

A lawsuit challenging Alexandria's waterfront development plans was dismissed Friday by a judge.

The lawsuit is one of three against the city, all of them opposing the city council's rezoning plan for the waterfront, which would allow greater commercial development there.

Citizens' groups in Alexandria have opposed redevelopment plans for the city's iconic waterfront for some time now, arguing that those plans would overwhelm the area at the foot of Old Town.

Earlier this year, residents filed a petition that would have require the plan to be approved by six of the seven council members. But the Board of Zoning Appeals rejected that petition, and residents who opposed the waterfront plan filed lawsuits instead.

The first of those lawsuits was dismissed Friday after a circuit court judge ruled that the court could not legally force the city to accept the petition.
