Democrat Rob Krupicka won Tuesday's special election to fill the vacant 45th District state House seat, beating Republican Tim McGhee and Libertarian Justin Malkin.

Krupicka received 6,384 votes, or 75.66 percent, compared with McGhee's 1,737, or 20.59 percent, and Malkin's 288 votes, or 3.41 percent. Write-in candidates received 29 votes, or 0.34 percent.

Of the 54,803 eligible, active voters for Tuesday's election, only 8,438 people cast ballots for the 45th District, which includes the eastern half of Alexandria, parts of southeast Arlington County and parts of the Mount Vernon District of Fairfax County.

Krupicka replaces Democratic Del. David Englin, who resigned in the wake of an extramarital affair. Gov. Bob McDonnell said he scheduled the September election to give the newest lawmaker "time to fully prepare for the 2013 legislative session."
