LOS ANGELES (AP) — The firm that maintains a South Los Angeles oil field where residents claim fumes have caused headaches, nosebleeds and other illnesses has been fined $99,000 by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday (http://lat.ms/1kqljIx ) that Allenco Energy, which owns the 2-acre site in the University Park neighborhood, was given 70 days to pay the penalty.

An EPA investigation found that Allenco violated federal environmental laws by failing to prepare and execute a spill prevention and control plan, and failing to submit chemical inventory forms for hazardous substances stored there.

The EPA probe was prompted by hundreds of complaints in the community near the University of Southern California.

The firm says it's committed to working with the EPA.

The oil field's operations have been suspended since November.
