The American Press reports (http://bit.ly/TsOzyf ) the improvements will be made to its Bulk Terminal No. 1.
The port has partnered with Lake Charles Clean Energy, a subsidiary of Leucadia Energy, which will use new gasification technologies to produce industrial liquid and gas products from petroleum coke.
The $2.5 billion project will be located next to the port's bulk cargo handling facility.
At the bulk terminal, the petcoke storage area will be reconfigured and new docks will be built.
The gasification plant will create 165 permanent jobs and 50 new jobs to the port. Construction will begin by mid-2013.
