If anyone is planning on filing their federal income tax return in the next few days, they are not alone: statistically, about a quarter of all returns are mailed in the last week of tax season. No matter how close to the wire some will get, as long as a return is postmarked by April 15, the IRS considers the federal income tax return filed on time. And while some will need that postmark by April 15, that doesn’t mean that they will have to be out the door by 6:00pm. The US Post Office has extended hours on Tax Day at some locations to make life easier.
