A lawyer for D.C. Councilman Michael Brown's fired campaign treasurer said Wednesday that his client is not responsible for the theft of nearly $114,000 from Brown's political war chest.

"We will vigorously and zealously defend Hakim Sutton, his good name and reputation," J. Wyndal Gordon said in a statement. "Brown knows for a fact that no money has been stolen."

Brown has not explicitly named Sutton as a suspect in the theft, the extent of which the lawmaker disclosed late Monday, but he fired his longtime treasurer in June after learning of the embezzlement. He also listed Sutton as the payee on campaign finance reports for "unexplained" expenditures.

The disappearance of the campaign funds left Brown with less than $18,000 heading into the Nov. 6 general election.

If authorities charge Sutton, Gordon warned, the public would "find out about the skuldduggery [sic] and debauchery" in which he is alleging Brown has engaged.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday that the agency is conducting "a very active investigation," but no one has been charged. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

Asher Corson, a spokesman for Brown's campaign, said he would not respond to what he characterized as "baseless personal attacks."
