Leesville seeks more funding for airport work

LEESVILLE, La. (AP) — City officials have approved removal of a hill near the Leesville municipal airport if more funding can be found for the project.

The American Press reports (http://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) the City Council delayed accepting bids for the work in July because they exceeded an engineer's estimate. The low bid was more than $71,000 above estimates.

The Federal Aviation Administration will provide 90 percent of the funding to remove the hill, making the airport's landing zone safer and more accessible. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will provide the rest of the money.

Senior project manager Kyle Randall of consulting firm Pan American Engineers told council members the scope of the project could be adjusted if federal and state agencies say they cannot provide more funding.
