Fast Eddie & the Slowpokes' foot-tapping groove won the hearts of the audience at the 2012 DC Blues Society Battle Of The Bands (congratulations, guys!), and now they're set to compete at the 30th International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.
To lighten their travel expenses, The DC Blues Society is hosting a fundraiser this weekend at Ritchie Coliseum (U.Md. campus). The Fabulous Fifth Annual Free College Park Blues Festival will play host to some of the most talented blues bands in the District like Ayaba Bey and the Nighthawks along with DC Blues Society founders Eleanor Ellis, Rick Franklin and Mark Wenner.
Some great vendors will be present, and food and beverages will be offered. You'll also get a chance to purchase raffle prizes from local restaurants. This event is free and starts at 6 p.m.
Moonshining may be illegal without the proper permits, but that doesn't stop overall-wearing reality star Tim Smith from hitting the forests of the Appalachians -- and risking it all -- to concoct this high proof whisky. Now that moonshining season is over, Smith is setting down his shotgun and heading to D.C. on Saturday to spend an evening with fans at the Tap Room of the Black Squirrel (2427 18th St. NW). Smith will sign autographs, pose for photos, and swap moonshining tales.
Smith will feel right at home with the Black Squirrel's stash of moonshine provided by Asheville, N.C.-based Howling Moon Distillery. Chef Gene Sohn will also be whipping up a special Appalachian-style food menu.
The event starts at 6 p.m. Never seen the show? Tune in to the second season of "Moonshiners" on Discovery Channel.
