There’s no white Christmas in store for Washington, but there will be plenty of sunshine in the region during the extended holiday weekend.

Skies will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature near 53 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Travelers in the mountains west of the city could find light snow above 2,000 feet, although no precipitation is in the forecast for Washington.

The mercury will drop during the weekend with the high reaching 44 on Saturday and 49 on Christmas Day. Forecasters said dry weather and mostly sunny skies are on tap.

Monday’s high will top out near 45 degrees ahead of a storm system that will bring chances of rain during the evening and overnight hours, the weather service said.

Traffic this morning was lighter than normal on Washington-area highways and no major travel problems were reported.
