Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Sharon Bulova sided publicly with the more outspoken Republican members of her board Thursday in oppossing the purchase of a privately-run, $400 million trash incinerator.

Bulova's statement saying she'd prefer to renegotiate the current lease came during an interview on WTOP.

The incinerator, located in the Lorton area, has been operated for 20 years by Covanta Fairfax, the local branch of the international garbage giant. According to Covanta's contract with the county, Fairfax has an option to buy the plant this year.

County staff recommended the purchase, saying it'd save the county money in the long run (the very long run – as savings wouldn't be realized until 2029). County Executive Anthony Griffin seconded their opinion.

Republican board members, led by Pat Herrity of Springfield, balked at the staff analysis, emphasizing concern over throwing down $400 million when the plant has been run privately for 20 years without serious complaint.

The board has until Tuesday to decide. The remaining six supervisors have yet to take a public stance.
