Alexandria's main thoroughfare for cute boutiques and snazzy restaurants was named one of America's "10 Great Streets" by the American Planning Association.
The association said King Street, which predates the American Revolution, has exceptional historic character and is a thriving commercial center.
"Through each subsequent era, King Street has successfully maintained its significance as Alexandria's commercial center and gathering place, thanks to careful planning, community involvement and historic preservation,” said Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille.
The city will celebrate the award with music, art, food and special performances Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the intersection of King and Union streets.
