An Alexandria activist was fatally shot shortly after he disappeared in September, and a reward of $38,000 is being offered for information that will lead to his killer, police said Monday.

The body of Lenwood "Lenny" Harris, 53, was recovered Saturday from a the bottom of a 23-foot-deep well in Fort Washington. The autopsy revealed he was killed by gunshot wound.

Police discovered the body after an anonymous caller told officials to look inside the well in the 11900 block of Old Fort Road, said Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw.

The complex crime scene presented numerous challenges for investigators, which required the hiring of a private excavation company. It took two days to move the mounds of earth to get to Harris' body without compromising the crime scene.

Authorities began looking for Harris, an advocate for residents of public housing in Alexandria, after he failed to show up to give a presentation at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center and his cell phone was discovered on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Police released a photo of a man who used Harris's credit card at an automated teller machine. Harris's car was found in Prince George's County.

The man who used his credit card, described by police as a "person of interest" in the case, is a black man who has a moustache and a small goatee. The man has a muscular build and has tattoos on his right and left forearms.
