Triathlon competitor dies A Nation’s Triathlon competitor died of a heart attack during the bicycle portion of the event Sunday morning, D.C. police said.

The unidentified man rolled up to the race’s medical team and said he needed assistance, race director Bill Burke said. Shortly thereafter he went into cardiac arrest.

“He must have known there was something going on,” Burke said.

Police said the man was transported from the 5700 block of Clara Barton Parkway to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead at the hospital about 9 a.m.

Man killed by asphalt roller

A construction worker was struck by an asphalt roller and died in Fairfax County on Saturday afternoon.

Edgar Tobar, 40, of Woodbridge, was standing near a roadway at a construction site on the 7300 block of Statecrest Drive about 12:30 p.m. when a co-worker lost control of the asphalt roller he was driving and ran over Tobar. Emergency workers transported him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Detectives determined no criminal charges will be filed. The investigation has been turned over to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, Fairfax County police said.

Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run

A 27-year-old woman was walking across westbound Suitland Parkway at Naylor Road when she was hit by a car and fatally injured early Saturday morning.

Police said it was just after midnight when the driver hit the woman and drove away, apparently leaving no witnesses to the accident.

The victim was a D.C. resident.

The U.S. Park Police Criminal Investigations Unit is asking for anyone with information to call the unit’s tip line at 202-610-8737.
