Authorities say the 2000 disappearance of a 7-year-old from Virginia is considered suspicious, but investigators have no current leads about what might have happened to her.
Brittany Renee Williams was last seen with an adult woman in Henrico on Aug. 18, 2000, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Brittany’s mother had died shortly before then, said Melinda Stevens, director of NCMEC’s missing children’s division. The woman was temporarily caring for Brittany after her mother’s death and was supposed to take the girl to authorities so permanent custody of the child could be determined.
“That did not happen,” Stevens said.
Over the past 12 years, investigators have been trying to figure out why Brittany vanished, whether she left on her own and where she could have gone. Authorities don’t know whether she has remained in the Henrico area, gone elsewhere in Virginia or somewhere else entirely, Stevens said.
“We have not received any leads on Brittany in quite some time,” she said.
Brittany would be 19 years old now. At the time she went missing, she was described as black, 3 feet 8 inches tall and 65 pounds. She had short black hair and brown eyes. She had a scar on the left side of her chest from a medical procedure and might have needed additional medical care.
