Metro riders already weary of broken escalators throughout the subway system, be warned.
Metro will be shutting down escalators at Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom for a year while workers completely rebuild the stairways, according to Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel.
"As many of our customers know, we have had many challenges in terms of maintaining the units at Foggy Bottom and also the units at Dupont Circle at 19th Street," Taubenkibel said. "Those units are very unique in terms of their design and also the parts available to us, which is why in those cases, those units are undergoing a complete replacement."
Work on the Foggy Bottom escalators began in January. Repairs will begin soon at Dupont Circle.
The work is a part of Metro's ongoing $148 million, six-year repair plan for the escalators, Taubenkibel said. About 144 escalators will be fixed, and nine will be replaced entirely. Workers will repair 31 elevators as well.
