An Occupy DC protest aimed at a group of mayors who were meeting in the District deteriorated into a melee that left a protester charged with assaulting a police officer, marking the fourth charge of assault against a law enforcement officer by an Occupier in recent weeks.

Two protesters were taken away in ambulances -- one with an injured wrist and another who said he had been kicked in the back of the knee during a confrontation with police outside the Capital Hilton, which was hosting the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Winter Meeting.

Occupiers -- who included protesters from camps across the country -- said they wanted to enter the building to speak with the 250 mayors inside about various local issues.
