Riverdale Park town officials are scheduled to vote this evening on whether to support a zoning change critical to bringing Prince George's County its first Whole Foods.

Developers need the Prince George's County Planning Board to rezone a 37-acre parcel in northern Prince George's County in order to start construction.

In a draft letter to the board, Riverdale Park officials recommend approving the zoning change, but only if dozens of changes are made to the development plan, such as trimming large swaths of surface parking and leaving room for bike trails and other transportation to access the development in the future. Changes are needed to "create a truly mixed-use community that has a mix of uses throughout the site," according to the draft letter.

The land, owned by the Cafritz family, is currently zoned for residential development only. Developers want the property to be absorbed into Riverdale Park's Mixed Use Town Center plan, or MUTC zone, which would allow construction of the organic grocery store as well as retail space, office buildings and housing.
