Virginia Republicans dropped their plans to have voters sign loyalty oaths before they are allowed to cast ballots in the March 6 primary, but now the party wants to overturn a century-old practice and start requiring voters to register by political party.

Virginians don't register by party and that means anyone can vote in either a Republican or Democratic primary. Legislation changing that passed a Senate panel Wednesday on a 4-3 party-line vote with Democrats opposing it.

Republicans argue that the current rules allow members of the opposition party to meddle in the other party's primary.
