An Afghan assembly of tribal elders and other leaders has called on President Hamid Karzai to sign a security pact that would allow American troops to stay in the country after 2014. Karzai had asked for the agreement to be signed after April 5 elections. Reuters reported that none of the 2,500 delegates at the assembly, or Loya Jirga, had objected to signing the deal. American troops would remain in Afghanistan primarily to train and mentor government security forces struggling to face a resilient Taliban insurgency on their own.
