MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow suggested that Republican discussions of social mobility or immigrant success is intended to distract people from Mitt Romney’s wealth.

“It is a marvelous bit of organized, distracting stagecraft,” Maddow said in reference to Republican speeches delivered last night. Her video clip showed speakers talking about earned success — Mia Love recalling her Haitian parents immigrating to the country with $10 to their name, or Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., talking about his mother, for instance — during the previous two nights of the convention.

“It is a powerful counter-spin to the reality of who the Republican Party is nominating tonight,” Maddow said.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews chimed that Democratic voters support their candidates for ideological reasons, while “Republicans generally support the self-interest of their tax bracket, but it’s embarrassing [given Romney's wealth].”
