ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando Magic learned one thing about new coach Jacque Vaughn during their first workout of the preseason: He is going to run his show efficiently.

The Magic ran through their first workout of the new year, scheduled for two hours, in just 90 minutes.

Vaughn said he drew from former mentors like college coach Roy Williams in laying out the schedule. But he also is doing it out of necessity.

Rookie Maurice Harkless, a first-round draft pick by Philadelphia who was acquired in the Dwight Howard trade, had offseason surgery for a sports hernia.

Also, backup point guard Ish Smith is recovering from surgery for a torn labrum in his shoulder. And forward Al Harrington, another trade acquisition, is coming off knee surgery.
