According to federal statistics, the amount of heating oil burned in Maine homes in 2010 declined to levels not seen since 1984. Consumption has been falling steadily since 2004 and is expected to continue.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/TNE6ON ) reports that Maine burned about 189 million gallons of oil in 2010, down from 838 million gallons in 2003.
The amount of heating oil burned in Maine households was cut by more than half from 2004 to 2010.
One reason is the rising cost of oil.
There have also been efforts to reduce reliance on oil and heat instead with natural gas, propane and wood, and make homes more energy efficient.
