Amidst so much confusing and contradictory information by Malaysian officials, the most heart-rending impact is clearly on the families of passengers and crew aboard the missing Boeing 777 aircraft. The cruelest example may be the text message sent to family members confirming that the flight had been lost and none aboard survived. Malaysian officials defended their text, claiming that they wanted to let families know before they publicly announced their conclusions. Family assistance requirements have been slow in coming in the international community. It seems that an important lesson for International Civil Aviation Organization’s member countries would be to adopt an international standard for family assistance that would then carry the force of international law.
