A man attempted to sexually assault a 23-year-old Alexandria woman Tuesday night, police officials said.

The attack took place at about 9:45 p.m. in the wooded area just south of the creek in the 5300 block of Holmes Run Parkway.

The suspect approached the woman when she was walking in a park near a community garden area. He started talking to her, grabbed her, pulled her into a secluded area and tried to sexually assault her. The victim broke free and ran away from her attacker, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The man is described as black, in his 20s, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9 and 200 to 220 pounds. He was wearing all black clothing.

Detectives don't think that this incident is related to an assault that occurred in the same area on Sept. 12.

Anyone with information can call police at 703-746-6711. Callers can remain anonymous.
