D.C. police have charged a 46-year-old man with murder in the death of a 4-year-old girl who died in a house fire last week.

Jerome Calvary Lewis is charged with slaying 4-year-old Samauri Jenkins who died from injuries sustained in a house fire in the Southeast.

At approximately 3:13 in the morning on Sunday Feb. 17 an officer reported seeing smoke from a residence in the 2600 block of 33rd Street SE. When police and firefighters got to the scene, SClBfamily members told them a female child was unaccounted for. Jenkins was found inside the home unconscious and not breathing. She was taken to a local hospital where she died two days later from her injuries.

District police Officer Hugh Carew declined to say how Jenkins' death was caused by Lewis. He also said he did not know at this time whether Lewis was also being charged with arson.

Several other people escaped the home and were transported to area hospitals. A male toddler was treated and released, two adult females were admitted in stable condition and an adult female was treated and released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
